About the project
The Meriba Omasker Kaziw Kazipa project developed a communication resource explaining the legal recognition of the culturally sensitive Ailan Kastom child-rearing practice. Created with community members and subject matter experts, the package translates complex legislation into clear, practical information while respecting culture, language and community knowledge.
The challenge
The project required a careful balance of legal accuracy and deep cultural respect. Complex law had to be made accessible, engaging and culturally safe, with language developed alongside community members and content available in English and Torres Strait Islander Creole.
The solution
IM led extended, in-person focus groups and workshops with community members and legal experts. Working with the Commissioner’s office, the team clarified complex concepts, identified appropriate legal terms and translated content into local Creole. A multilingual, multimodal approach combined a website, print materials, fact sheets, facilitated discussions and a step-by-step explainer animation.
The results
The project delivered a publicly accessible and culturally respectful legal communication package in English and Yumplatok. Clear guides, translated resources and an explainer animation made the legislation easier to understand for audiences of different ages. The package also created approachable pathways for community members seeking further support and advice through Legal Aid.
